If you are someone who really enjoys DIY projects or your work involves using cordless tools, you know the pain of a battery that has just run out and you need to wait for it to charge to continue your project. An empty battery is something that annoys many of us, whether it’s the one in our phone, a camera battery, or, as I said, a power tool battery. Still, it’s not the end of the world. You can just recharge it, right?

Right, but what kind of charger are you supposed to use? What makes a good charger good? And more importantly, what makes a good battery so good that you won’t even feel the charging time? What are the ones that last the longest? Is there even such a thing?

Yes, there is, and those batteries are Li-Ion batteries. Pairing perfectly with high-quality DeWalt battery chargers, they offer a battery experience that extends way beyond longevity and durability. Here are a few reasons why Li-Ion DeWalt batteries are something you should always look for, what they can give you, what makes them so different from the rest, and most importantly – what makes them such a stellar battery to have in your cordless power tool.

Longevity

Having a battery that will last long enough, both during a work session and overall, is very important. It can save you a lot of time and money and it can increase your productivity significantly, as you won’t be spending so much time charging it or replacing it.

When it comes to longevity in Li-Ion batteries, there are two phases we need to look at. How long a charge lasts and how long is the overall lifetime of said battery.

We already know Li-Ion batteries from our phones, as they are very much dispersed around different industries and are used everywhere, but when it comes to power tool batteries the situation is a bit different. Most of us notice that after a couple of years our phone battery starts to lose its capacity, slowly getting weaker and weaker until it finally gives out. This means that a phone Li-Ion battery starts losing longevity in both phases after a couple of years.

However, when it comes to power tool batteries, a charge will last a lot more than what you see on your phone and its overall lifetime can span anywhere from 3 to about 8 or even more years with proper charging and proper use. That’s why having a well-made, brand-named charger, like the DeWalt battery chargers I talked about can really aid in adding worktime to your battery!

Fast Charging

While some other batteries might need a few hours to charge completely and be able to power your tool up once again, Li-Ion batteries, when paired with a good charger, can be up and running in as little as thirty minutes! Li-Ion batteries can charge faster than any other rechargeable type battery, but when your charger also provides fast charging – it’s a dream team.

Spending a lot of downtime, no matter if you’re working on a DIY project for the home or you’re working is never any fun nor does any good as it just wastes precious time you could have spent being productive with your machine. However, if your tool features a Li-Ion battery, you’ll get enough time for a coffee or lunch break and when you come back your battery will be charged and ready to go.

What’s more, these batteries are really smart when charging, with some of them preventing over or undercharging to avoid any damage from happening and ruining your battery and tool completely. This is also a feature some battery chargers have, especially digital ones, so if you’re someone who likes to leave things to charge overnight you should definitely invest in such a battery charger!

Maintenence & Impact

There’s nothing worse than a battery that overheats or needs constant attention to make sure its health is up to par and won’t cause the battery to stop working. Li-Ion batteries rarely overheat, especially in well-designed power tools. Manufacturers like DeWalt know what their products are all about, so they make sure that the batteries they install will be able to take the heat (pun intended!) without being negatively affected by it.

What’s more, we spoke of smart chargers as well, which can diagnose your batteries and prevent wrong charging. Still, to make the best out of a battery and charger combo I’d recommend getting the same kind of battery and pairing it with a charger of the same kind, too. For example, a DeWalt battery and a DeWalt battery charger will allow you to be completely sure of your batteries health, allowing you to basically forget about any maintenance.

Furthermore, Li-Ion batteries are much safer and greener than any other battery type out there because of their durability, their composition, and the fact that they need much less electricity to be charged completely. Maybe you’re not one to really care about such issues, but if you can do something to help the environment and yourself, why skip the chance?

To Sum Up

Li-Ion batteries are the perfect power tool battery because of their years-long lifetime, their fast-charging abilities, and the fact they require little to no oversight when charging while offering top runtime and performance for your power tool.

Still, always keep in mind that even though they are one of the safest types of batteries out there they still need to be treated with care, so follow the instructions that come with your power tool and don’t overuse it. This can result in a number of issues I’m sure you don’t want to deal with and bring along downtime you just can’t afford.

Either way, next time you’re faced with the decision of what power tool to buy, look for one with a Li-Ion battery, pair it with a matching charger, and you’ll be all set to go for a long, long time.
