Exploring the Power of LED High Bay Lights

By Steven Harrisson, December 29, 2020

The latest improvement in the world of lights has been the introduction of LED technology. The widespread use of LED lights has made them available in all kinds of shapes. One of the main things that make LEDs special is that they can provide exceptional illumination without using up a lot of power as conventional light bulbs. This is why the LED technology has become a popular choice for high bay lights. These lights are placed on a ceiling and they are mostly used in warehouses where the ceilings are really tall and require a strong light. LEDs can provide this without increasing the cost of the utility bill. If you own a warehouse, you might want to take a look at installing high bay lights.

How Many LED High Bay Lights Do I Need?

The number of LED-powered high bays you’ll need will depend on the size and height of the ceiling. Normal high bay lights need to be spaced out with 4.5 m between them. This is if your ceiling sits at 6 m and you need bright light. For normal illumination, you’ll need about 5.4 m of space between each LED high bay light. If your warehouse ceiling is 9 m high then you’ll need to at least 6 m between each light to make the space bright enough. The distance between each light will give you the number of lights you need to install.

How to Install High Bay Lights?

Preparation

Since you’re dealing with electricity the first thing you need to do is ensure safety. This is done by disconnecting the power supply. This will repent you from getting an electric shock and from damaging the lights too.

Installation

1. Go to the junction box of the light fixture and loosen the screw or open the cover and retrieve the wires in the box. If you need dimming you can connect the dimmer function of the LED high bay light to the dimming wires. The purple wire is usually dimming up and the grey wire is dimming down. Once you’ve connected the wires push them through the holes in the cover and tighten the screws to close the cover.

2. Once you’re done with all this, get the hooks and chain provided with the lights and pass the chain through the hooks. Then attach both hooks to the sides of the light and continue by affixing the light onto the rail. To do this, hang the chain onto the crossbar and adjust its length. If you have no crossbar, make sure to install one as you won’t be able to hang the lights.

3. Lastly, connect the lights to the power supply and adjust them accordingly. Make sure they are at the correct distance from the floor and that they are not too bright, This is where the dimming function comes handy as this way you can adjust the brightness of the light to your liking.

Why Go For LED High Bay Lights

Energy Savings

Your warehouse does not require the same amount of lighting as your household which is why LED high bay lights can make a big change in saving you a lot of money. Since LEDs do not produce a lot of heat, this means that the lighting fixtures are not going to use a lot of power, unlike conventional lights. There isn’t any energy loss here and even if there is it’s marginal. This can make a night and day difference, especially when it comes to big warehouses and quite tall ceilings too.

Maintenance

LED is a simple technology, it relies on the interaction of electrons which are contained in energy bands. When these bands get separated, (this happens when electricity is sent to the “bulb”), they create photons (light particles) which are then emitted by the LED. There is no filament or wires that can easily break or snap if they get too hot or when they aren’t handled with care. Here you have semiconductors that handle everything, which means they are easy to replace which is especially important when you’re high up. One component does all the work here, which is what makes LED last for a long time.

Uniformity & Longevity

Longevity is something LED high bays are known for and usually their lifespan is about 10,000 hours. This, of course, depends on how often you’ll use them and for how long too. Light uniformity is something you’ll notice right away with high bay LED lights. The light you get when you first turn them on is the light that will stay until you turn them off. No flickering or delay. You can turn them off and on as many times as you wan’ and they won’t lose on brightness or make the lights falter too. Just consistency all throughout their long lifespan.
