Have you ever hoped for a simple way to stay calm while navigating through your busy schedule? Sensory fidgets might be just what you need!

These small, tactile toys are effective for managing restlessness and improving concentration, regardless of age. In this article, you’ll get familiar with the concept of sensory fidget tools, the different types you can try, and how they support neurodiverse minds.

What is a Sensory Fidget?

A sensory fidget keeps your hands busy and senses entertained. These little toys often come in various textures, shapes and colours that soothe your mind. If you experience anxiety and stress daily, or you need a little push to finish a chore or an activity, sensory fidgets can be a helpful tool to ground you and silence your thoughts.

You might find them especially useful if you have a sensory processing difference or if you find tactile stimulation helpful. These fidgets satisfy your sense of touch, sight and sound, offering a repetitive motion to follow.

Today, there’s a wide variety of sensory toys available, including a thought-out autism fidget toy selection that supports neurodivergent minds. These toys are also great for neurotypical minds who want to reduce stress or improve concentration at a given moment.

Benefits of Using Sensory Fidgets

source: citysupplyfayetteville.com

Whether you’ve decided to give them a try for specific reasons or to keep your hands busy, sensory fidgets offer a range of benefits other than just distraction. Using a sensory fidget offers more than just something to do with your hands. Today, the constant dopamine rush triggered by endless social media scrolling has significantly reduced our attention spans.

That’s why keeping fidget toys around promotes focus, especially during tasks such as studying, work meetings, or simply holding a conversation. The way it works is that when your hands are busy, your brain feels less overwhelmed and clears the path for better concentration.

It is very easy to get into a loop of panicking and stressing over a problem, and a sensory fidget can help with emotional regulation. Squeezing, spinning, or rubbing your toy makes a shift in nervous energy and brings a sense of calm. It truly is puzzling how a simple physical outlet can help your body and mind relax in moments when it’s hard to do anything else.

Another benefit from these small toys is the tactile stimulation they provide. They come in a variety of materials and shapes, and once you figure out what suits you, they provide comfort and satisfaction through simple stimulation. People who experience sensory sensitivities or those who thrive on sensory input will find them useful. In short, fidget toys are friendly little companions that help keep your physical and mental states calm.

Types of Sensory Fidgets

There are plenty of fun and helpful types of sensory fidget toys to choose from. Here’s a friendly guide to the popular ones you should check out:

Textured Fidget Toys

These toys engage your sense of touch, allowing you to experience sensations through their textured surfaces, including bumps, ridges and grooves. Textured fidgets offer children who are hypersensitive to tactile input a gentle and engaging way to process touch. Through playing with sensory balls, textured mats and squishy gel toys, they also improve their motor skills.

Fidget Toys

Fidget spinners, cubes and textured rings provide a motion that is known to help with anxiety and ease restlessness. Teachers believe these toys enhance classroom concentration and improve students’ memory. By offering a calming sensory experience, fidget toys serve as effective tools in stressful and distracting environments, steering attention toward meaningful activities and learning.

Squishy Fidgets

These fidgets are soft and squishable. You can squish them down, and they bounce back. Squeezing a soft fidget can release your tension and provide comforting feedback. They will help you regulate your emotions and calm your nervous system when the world becomes too much.

Switch Fidgets

These fidgets have buttons or switches you can push or flip. Flipping, pressing, or sliding on them similarly to squishy fidgets channels restless energy and sharpens focus. They’re especially useful for children and adults who respond well to repetitive motion and sound-based stimulation.

Stretchy Bands or Rings

Stretchy bands and rings are a type of autism fidget toy that allows you to pull, twist, squeeze and release all the trapped emotions and energy inside you. They are not easily breakable, so you can stretch and pull the bands freely. If you have a child who requires physical engagement to stay calm, now is the time to give it a try.

Tactile Balls

Tactile balls are perfect for therapeutic play, offering benefits through gripping, squeezing and rolling, ideal for both children and adults. They help develop motor skills in children, as well as sensory awareness and hand-eye coordination. Children with sensory processing challenges, low muscle tone or visual processing disorders may find tactile balls useful for deep pressure and massage stimulation.

Calming Toys

Designed to soothe neurodivergent minds, they help reduce anxiety and overstimulation in those who are overwhelmed by their environment. The most popular calming toys are soft plush toys, calming jars with glitter and some audio-producing items.

The idea is to promote relaxation and emotional regulation in stressful situations. Sensory toys come in a variety of styles that are popular among both adults and children. They are all about making your day a little calmer and more comfortable, so make sure to try out a few and choose what works for you.

Sensory Fidgets and Neurodiversity

Sensory fidgets are truly appreciated tools for neurodiversity, supporting minds and needs. Here’s how they benefit different groups:

ADHD: Fidget toys for ADHD help reduce restlessness and impulsivity, and productively manage excess energy.

Autism: An autism fidget toy promotes calming tactile play and emotional regulation for people on the spectrum, making their everyday transitions feel less overwhelming.

Special Needs: The special needs fidgets are great tools for self-soothing and exploring senses.

Anxiety and OCD: Controlling repetitive and intrusive thoughts is usually a challenge for this group, but fidgeting toys have proven the opposite.

Hyperactive Children: Fidgets help hyperactive children reduce restlessness and focus in the classroom without disrupting others.

These toys celebrate and support the different ways our brains are wired, making daily life a bit easier and enjoyable.

Final Thoughts

Sensory fidgeting is a simple yet powerful way to gain control over your calmness, focus, or comfort efforts throughout the day. Make sure you try them out and find which one works best for you. The better they are, the more likely you are to manage stress in a way that feels natural and fitting to you.

There are many risks associated with sleep apnea including heart attack stroke and mood disorders due to lack of sleep. Those who suffer from sleep apnea know well the struggle of going through their everyday lives without being able to function properly. Luckily, we live in a time when medical engineering has advanced like never before and we have so many devices available to help us with various problems, including sleep apnea. CPAP machines are designed to help patients with sleep apnea breathe easier and sleep sounder. Here’s everything you need to know before you buy CPAP machines.

What Are CPAP Machines and How Do They Work?

CPAP machines are used to treat obstructive sleep apnea by providing constant pressure during the night. CPAP stands for continuous positive airway pressure. It means that a CPAP machine pumps constant pressure into the body during sleep. The pressure is released through a tube that is connected to a mask and the patient breathes in the positive air pressure with the help of the mask.

Different types of masks can be attached to the CPAP device:

Nasal pillow masks that are placed below the nose and have silicone tubes that go inside the nostrils

Nasal masks – they can have an oval or triangular shape and they sit only at the nose area, without covering the mouth

Full-face masks that provide full coverage of the nose and mouth

People who suffer from obstructive sleep apnea experience temporary loss of breath during sleep. Why is this happening? Muscles relaxing in the back of the through reduce the space for the air to pass through, the upper airway collapses and creates a blockage in the breathing passages which makes it hard to inhale air.

CPAP machines promote airflow and circulation, which relieves the symptoms of sleep apnea and reduces the risk of negative effects that come with this disorder, providing comfortable sleep without any disruptions.

Types of CPAP Machines

Although the term CPAP is generally used to describe positive pressure machines, there are several different types of CPAP machines with some key differences between them.

CPAP Machines (Continues Positive Airway Pressure) – they are the most affordable among the other types and they provide excellent treatment for sleep apnea. They are pre-set to deliver a fixed level of pressure throughout the night. You cannot adjust the level of pressure manually.

APAP Machines (Automatic Positive Airway Pressure) – can adjust the pressure based on your sleep phase and breathing patterns. They can sense when there is a change in the pressure level and can automatically adjust to increase the pressure.

BiPAP Machines (Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure) – provide two levels of air pressure. They are designed to detect the levels of air pressure when you breathe in and exhale so they can administer higher pressure when you inhale.

Travel CPAP Machines are ideal for travelling due to their mini size. They are standard CPAP devices that work on the same principle and are easily portable.

Can I Buy CPAP Machines in Australia Without a Prescription?

source: resmed.com

If you’re looking to buy CPAP machines in Australia, keep in mind that you don’t have to have a prescription. However, it’s always a good idea to consult with your doctor before you start using the machine. You can take a sleep study to determine the intensity of your sleep apnea and what is the type of PAP machine you need.

How Much Does it Cost to Buy a CPAP Machine in Australia?

As already mentioned, there are different types of PAP machines and the cost varies accordingly.

Standard CPAP machines can cost between $1.000 and $2.000/2.195. Automatic machines have a fairly higher price tag and the cost can range from $1.400 to $2.900.

BiPAP machines are relatively expensive and they vary in price from $3.000 to $4.000 and above, whereas travel CPAP machines cost from 870 up to $2.600 for high-end devices.

Also, take into consideration that the price for the same type of machine can vary between different retailers and manufacturers and between provinces. Therefore, how much will a CPAP machine cost you, depends on several factors and it’s best to check with the company where you want to buy one.

Another thing to consider when it comes to the cost of PAP machines is that they require regular maintenance, which means you will frequently need to change and replace parts such as filters, masks, headgear and so on. The cost can only add up with time, but it’s important to invest in a life-saving machine that can make a significant transformation in your health. After all, it’s the ideal solution for sleep apnea.

Pros and Cons of CPAP Machines

Just like with any other device, CPAP machines also have positive and negative sides of using them. Having some negative aspects of using them doesn’t mean they are not safe or can pose a threat to your health. It means that the use of CPAP machines comes with some discomforts that can be managed.

Pros of Using a CPAP Machine:

Reduces the risks of health complications

Relieves breathing discomfort

Reduces snoring

Improves heart health

Lowers blood pressure

Reduces the risks of heart failure and stroke

Improves sleeping cycles

Improves mental health

Improves cognitive function

Cons of Using a CPAP Machine:

Experience discomfort at the beginning of the use

Dry mouth – this is usually due to the air being pushed through the machine into the mouth. However, some machines use a humidifier to prevent dry mouth.

Nasal congestion

Many patients complain about having to wear the mask all night which can make them feel claustrophobic

Skin irritation and breakouts on the face where the mask is placed

Due to the tube and the mask, patients cannot sleep on their stomach

Some complain about the loud noise that CPAP machines produce ( the latest development in technology allows you to buy machines with much lower levels of noise so you and your partner don’t have to be stressed about the sound of the machine)

The benefits of using CPAP outweigh the negative aspects. All symptoms of discomfort can be managed and it usually takes 2-3 weeks for people to adjust to CPAP. Of course, for some might take longer but if you experience any discomfort you cannot tolerate, speak with your health care provider.

Are CPAP Machines Effective?

There are several risks associated with untreated sleeping apnea such as high blood pressure, high levels of cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, congestive heart failure, heart attack and stroke. CPAP devices have been proven to successfully treat the symptoms of obstructive sleep, to stop snoring and to improve breathing patterns.

Besides serious effects on physical health, the lack of sleep caused by apnea can lead to deconcentration, fatigue, brain fog as well as emotional changes and depression. Therefore, CPAP machines are one of the most effective treatments for sleep apnea designed not to only relieve sleep apnea symptoms but prevent serious health consequences. It helps the person to lead a normal life without any difficulties.

Those who suffer from this disruptive disorder are mostly prescribed CPAP machines as a form of therapy to use at home. CPAP machines continue to be the golden standard in the medical field when it comes to successfully combating sleep apnea.

How to Clean a CPAP Machine?

You should be diligent with the maintenance and cleaning of your CPAP machine to avoid bacterial infections and build-up from the air pollutants. First, unplug the device from electricity. Separate the tube from the mask and the device, and wash it with soap and warm and clean water. Once you’re done with washing, leave the house to air-dry. If the machine comes with a humidifier, you need to wash the water chamber every morning with soap and distilled water.

It’s important to use only distilled water for the humidifier because it’s free from minerals and bacteria. Using normal tap water or bottled water if it’s not distilled, can cause a mineral build-up in the humidifier. And finally, the mask. Wash the soft cushion of the mask with a mild soap and rinse it thoroughly with warm and clean water. Let it air dry and do not expose it to direct sunlight.

Can I Travel Internationally With a CPAP Machine?

Most airline companies consider CPAP machines as medical devices and they don’t count your device in the luggage allowance. You’re able to take your machine with you through the airport, and there shouldn’t be a problem with storing it in the checked luggage. However, you should give a notice to the airline company that you will be bringing a CPAP device on the plain. Different airline companies have different policies regarding CPAP and it’s best to consult with them before the flight.

Consider Buying a Mini Travel CPAP Machine

source: redmark.co.za

If you are a frequent traveller or need to fly to a longer destination, the best hassle-free alternative to standard-size CPAP machines is to buy mini travel CPAP. They are portable and lightweight, run on batteries and have all the necessary features to support your breathing throughout the night when on the go.

So if you’re struggling with sleep apnea and haven’t been checked by a doctor yet, it’s recommendable to do so and consult with your health provider if you need a CPAP. CPAP machines will help you breathe normally, reduce the risks associated with sleep apnea and get your health back on track.

To prevent the spread of germs and cross-contamination among themselves, their patients, and their coworkers, hospital or healthcare staff dress in special medical attire. However, the medical facility, the dress code of their employer, and their work area all influence what nurses and doctors wear in terms of medical attire.

For instance, registered nurses in the emergency room cover up in gloves and masks to safeguard their skin and faces. To prevent bodily fluids from moving from patient to nurse and vice versa, they also wear medical scrubs, work-friendly clogs, or appropriate athletic footwear.

Depending on their job or area of expertise, nurses wear different kinds of scrubs, clogs, and work boots. The crucial hospital apparel for both staff and patient care is discussed in this article.

1. Medical Scrub Uniforms

Source: mediscrubs.com.au

Nursing staff typically dress in scrubs when performing their duties. Scrubs, which provide a sterile, easy-to-clean medical costume, assist in identifying doctors and nurses in a hospital or healthcare centre, and they also make it easier for personnel to swiftly wash and disinfect garments as needed. The comfortable mock wrap top scrubs frequently come in solid colours that make it simpler and more obvious to identify impurities.

However, some employees may dress in chic, designer scrubs in low-risk situations where wearing solid colours is not necessary. A scrub blouse and scrub pants that sufficiently cover and safeguard the nurse’s skin make up a scrub uniform. In surgical units or during some procedures, some healthcare workers also put on disposable isolation/surgical gowns to protect clothing. This layer offers an additional defence against microbial contamination.

Sometimes, staff members must choose mock wrap top scrubs and uniforms that fit properly and follow the strict dress code of the hospital they work for or the team of medical staff they are a part of. Additionally, scrubs with useful pockets are a plus and most of them have at least two. Important medical supplies, such as bandages, scissors, trauma shears, writing instruments, tape, alcohol swabs, and IV flushes, are kept in such pockets and compartments of the scrub.

2. Moisture-Resistant Undershirts and Underwear

Anyone who works at a hospital is aware that it isn’t always possible to clock in and leave according to regularly scheduled shift changes and hours. Being of service to the health and well-being of the public involves giving up some sleep time and putting a lot of time on your feet. That’s why wearing comfortable clothing of quality materials is key.

Similar to moisture-wicking shirts, moisture-wicking underwear can help you avoid the worst side effect of any activity—chafing—while also keeping you dry and comfortable. These are fantastic in any season, but they are especially helpful during warmer weather.

3. Compression Socks

Nurses sometimes express discomfort in their lower extremities, exhaustion or pain in their legs, plantar fasciitis, or foot pain. Legs feel stimulated thanks to compression socks’ increased blood circulation. Gradual compression keeps blood from collecting in the lower legs even after a long shift.

As a result, you feel less heavy, worn out, and uncomfortable. Evidence also points to compression socks as a possible assist in muscle repair. Therefore, wearing compression socks over a full day of seeing patients may help you avoid pain and swelling. Choosing compression treatment after work may aid in the quicker recovery of painful muscles when you fail to wear compression socks.

4. Comfortable Footwear

Clogs, running shoes, and nursing-friendly footwear offer sufficient defence against pathogens, spells, and other dangers. For instance, clogs give nurses sturdy midsoles and slip-resistant outsoles while also making it easier for them to see stains or liquids that have gotten on their shoes.

Additionally, they shield nurses from falls and make it simple to spot hazardous pollutants. This is crucial for preserving one’s health and keeping a tidy workplace. Keep in mind though, hospital employees must also dress professionally and, if at all feasible, in sports footwear.

Lightweight, flexible, and extremely mobile, athletic footwear is a great choice, and it goes well with both wrap scrub top and whole medical uniforms. However, due to risks in particular environments, it’s best to check if its design is suitable for use in your specific workplace.

Although most nurses work in non-emergency situations in sporty, comfy sneakers, it is always advisable to check the dress code too. And lastly, wearing high-quality shoes dramatically lessens joint, back, and knee pain. Work shifts are easier when you have the right shoes on, and being without such a pair can put your health and comfort in danger.

5. Face Covering (Shields, Glasses, and Face Masks)

Source: latercera.com

Protection for the eyes and face also prevents medical personnel from contaminating the patients they are treating or operating on. For instance, when working in the emergency room, a face mask keeps a nurse’s bodily fluid from sneezing or unintentional discharge from coming into touch with a patient.

Face masks, on the other hand, offer nurses the same protection when patient fluids become airborne. To distinguish potential stains or impurities that have landed on them, face masks are frequently white or blue. As a result, it is simpler to maintain a clean working environment and swap out contaminated face masks as needed.

Last but not least, the masks doctors wear vary on the environment and circumstance. However, surgical face masks and respiratory (N95) masks are the two that are most commonly used. In sensitive settings, most staff members don face masks. This covers ERs, ICUs, trauma centres, operating rooms, and other locations for critical care.

6. Medical/Surgical Gloves

When handling dangerous chemicals and patients’ bodily fluids, gloves offer hospital staff an extra layer of safety. Blood, saliva, urine, faeces, and many other bodily fluids and pathogens fall under this category. Gloves thereby prevent cross-contamination and shield users from spreading germs to their patients or coworkers.

To maintain a clean and safe healthcare institution, medical professionals must wear medical gloves in a variety of settings. For instance, handling dangerous chemicals, changing a patient’s clothing, working around a virus, cleaning/sterilizing medical equipment, or working in an operating room.

When it comes to staying healthy, eating a healthy diet and practising regular exercise are key things. But what else can you do to improve your overall wellbeing? The following are some super effective hacks that can help you bust out of that and start feeling awesome.

Add Health Supplements to Your Diet

Even if you eat a healthy diet, you might be missing certain vitamins or minerals. Aside from poor diet, poor soil quality and lack of variation in food intake can also contribute to vitamin and mineral deficiencies. Depletion of only one essential nutrient can result in imbalances in various metabolic pathways. Taking general health supplements can help ensure your body is functioning at its best.

With so many general health supplements available, how do you know which one to get? If you’re a beginner, a daily multivitamin will provide a good foundation for your health. It can also be beneficial if you’re sleeping poorly, are experiencing stress, or aren’t getting regular exercise. No matter what brand you choose, here are the ingredients you’ll want to find in your multivitamin:

source: guardian-ida-remedysrx.ca

Vitamin D – helps your body absorb calcium, which is beneficial for bone health. Not getting enough vitamin D can increase your chances of getting sick, and might lead to bone and back pain, as well as bone and hair loss.

Magnesium – is important to our bone health and energy production. Magnesium also plays an important role in calming our nervous system and reducing stress, can help ease sleep problems, regular muscle and nerve function and make protein, bone and even DNA.

Calcium – is necessary for strong bones and teeth. Plus, it has been reported that women, in particular, begin to lose bone density earlier and supplementing with calcium is the best nutritional defence against this loss.

Zinc- if you’re older or are under a lot of stress, you may be low in zinc. Supplementing with zinc will help support your immune system and aid your body to use protein, carbohydrates and fat for energy.

Folate – popular for aiding in foetus development and preventing birth defects, folate can also help you grow out your nails, fight depression and combat inflammation.

Quit Smoking

If you smoke, quitting is another great thing you can do to improve your health. This is true no matter your age or how long you’ve been smoking. Quitting smoking can help improve your health status and enhance your quality of life, reduce your risk of premature death and enhance your life expectancy by up to 10 years. This change in habits can further reduce the risk of different health effects such as cardiovascular diseases, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, poor reproductive health outcomes and cancer.

The nicotine withdrawal from stopping smoking may affect your mood, may give you headaches or sap your energy. Nicotine replacement therapy, such as nicotine gum, lozenges and patches that you can easily find online and at local pharmacies are essential to help curb urges, and improve your chances of success.

Try Aromatherapy

If you are experiencing health problems due to anxiety and poor sleep, you may want to try aromatherapy. It’s a type of alternative therapy that involves the use of essential oils (extracts from plants) by either breathing them or applying them to the skin.

Studies have shown that aromatherapy activates the smell receptors in the nose, which send messages through your nervous system to your brain, activating certain areas like the limbic system which plays an important part in your emotions. When applied to the skin, essential oils are known to cause a response in the skin and other parts of your body, like your joints.

While aromatherapy shouldn’t be used to replace regular medical treatment, it can help ease stress, anxiety and depression, can boost the feelings of relaxation, improve sleep and ease certain types of pain.

source: healthierbynature.ca

Get Proper Sleep

In order to function at your best, you need to get enough sleep. Instead of staying up late to watch TV, create a bedtime ritual that actually benefits you. That includes avoiding screens like the TV and your phone at least one hour before bed. Use this time to try something new like journaling, meditation or a calming skin-care routine.

Consider Ergonomics

In a workplace, 95% of the time is spent in front of a computer or other electronic device. We frequently forget that, in this process, our bodies are subjected to significant physical, psychological, and repeated stress, which contributes to a variety of chronic diseases such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, musculoskeletal ailments, and a variety of other difficulties that we are unaware of. There is also the fact that prolonged sitting is devastating for our health.

Improving the ergonomics in your office with the help of ergonomic accessories can help decrease pain, strengthen muscles and increase blood flow. Using ergonomic accessories such as a supportive keyboard and mouse, chair, standing desk, etc, will provide you with the physical support you need to protect your body while at work.

When you’re in less pain, your productivity tends to increase. With fewer distractions, you’ll be able to keep performing at your best and creating high-quality work. In today’s workplace, ergonomics is becoming increasingly crucial. As we become more reliant on digital technology, having a pleasant, safe, and healthy workplace in which to work for such lengthy periods of time is a must. It is very important that you or your employee establish such an atmosphere.

It’s important that you understand, though, that no single office ergonomic accessory can prevent musculoskeletal injury. A proper ergonomic approach should include a thorough evaluation of your workstation, as well as a re-evaluation of your workstyle techniques and personal health habits.

Ergonomic products also need to be used in combination with each other to deliver the desired results. This means, combining an ergonomic desk with an ergonomic chair, ergonomic monitor stand and ergonomic keyboard and mouse. Together, these tools can be an effective solution for reducing discomfort and injury while increasing productivity.

When it comes to creating an emergency kit, tools such as tactical LED flashlights, whistles and extra batteries are always a must. However, regardless of the application, no first aid and emergency kit can be imagined without a convenient tourniquet. These devices have proven to be most effective in stopping major extremity bleeding. Once applied to the skin, a tourniquet starts causing pressure and hence, temporary occlusion.

However, there are a couple of different types of tourniquets packed with different features and suitable for different applications. Here’s what you need to know about each of them.

Emergency Medical Tourniquets (EMT)

If you’re looking for something that is constantly rated the highest in various effectiveness studies, it’s recommended to get a medical emergency tourniquet for your first aid kit. As their name states, this type is mostly used in the medical industry and is typically bulkier and more expensive than the other types. But on account of that, you’re getting a pneumatic tourniquet that resembles a blood pressure cuff with the most robust securing mechanism.

In fact, emergency tourniquet models for medical applications use an open-loop system that is very easy to apply and compress even if placed loosely on the limb. Unlike blood pressure cuffs, tourniquet medical sets’ pneumatic bladder is designed to prevent air loss when inflated. This allows maintenance of pressure to the limb area once the loop is locked down.

source: verywellhealth.com

Combat Application Tourniquets (CAT)

Combat application tourniquets are the type that was first invented and widely used by the military until now. And it’s not even surprising, as these tourniquets have also been shown as very effective and saved countless lives.

However, combat tourniquets nowadays are way more sophisticated and come with reinforced technologies to correct the previous generations’ issues and ensure the best performance. For instance, these tourniquets’ straps are now completely apart so they can be easily placed around the limb and feature tight closed-loop systems. In other words, the user must tightly secure the strap to utilize the plastic windlass.

On the other hand, some manufacturers might recommend applying the tourniquet strap through the plastic buckle differently, depending on what area the tourniquet is being used on exactly. Then the strap should be secured on itself and locked for the windlass of these devices.

Military Emergency Tourniquets (MET)

Military emergency tourniquets are lightweight open-loop systems built from robust straps and aluminium windlasses. As they’re open-loop systems, these tourniquets can come apart to get placed around the limb, and they don’t need to be completely secured to cause the required pressure. More specifically, even if a MET is applied very loosely, by turning the windlass the slack will uptake and fully tighten the tourniquet.

Unlike some other models, military emergency tourniquets feature two secure points- one that is completely adjustable and one with Velcro straps. Some older generation models may feature narrow straps, while current versions have wider straps for better utilization.

As much as these tactical tourniquets have been shown as very effective, have in mind that they require training for those who’re not familiar with applying tourniquets.

source: eadyandarmed.net

Special Operation Forces Tourniquets (SOFT)

Special operation forces tourniquets are also among the oldest models and come in a bunch of reinforced versions. These tourniquets also use an open-loop system but feature a solid metal windlass, unlike other models that use plastic ones.

The earliest versions of this tourniquet type feature narrow straps and metal “alligator” clips with locking screws to secure the strap conveniently. Once applied, there’re two plastic D-ring securing points that are supposed to support the windlass. However, when using one of these, the user should make sure that the locking screw is secured well to avoid unintentional loosening of the tourniquet.

When it comes to the newer generations, the narrow strips are typically replaced with wider ones and the “alligator” clips are changed with break-apart buckles. Also, these models feature one D-ring securing point to make room for the buckle as a more convenient option.

Mechanical Advantage Tourniquets (MAT)

Unlike many of the other types mentioned above, medical advantage tourniquets use closed-loop systems where the strap is supposed to get hooked back on when applying. In fact, these devices are constructed from plastic and shaped into a “C” to be easily applied around the limb. Hence, they come in two different sizes- one for the arm and one for the leg.

When it comes to the internal mechanism for tightening the device, it’s a plastic dial that draws up a length of cord inside the tourniquet cuff when turned. However, in order to engage this internal mechanism, the strap has to be tightly applied and leaves a limited uptake. But when it comes to releasing it, you only need to easily lift the plastic hook that locks down the strap or press a convenient release button on the side of the device.

Ratcheting Medical Tourniquets

Last, but not least, ratcheting medical tourniquets also use a closed-loop system that tightens with a ratcheting, self-locking buckle. The latest version of these tourniquets features wide straps that can be fully released and opened to get the device placed around the limb. Once placed, the tourniquet should be routed through a metal ring and tightened down. In fact, once you apply pressure to the buckle, it automatically locks and keeps the device secured and allow it to maintain the required pressure over the affected area. When it comes to releasing them, this can be done by a simple press of a release button inside the buckle.

Some of the benefits of wearing a brace as treatment include:

Enhanced stability – by shifting weight away from the joint damaged area, braces help reduce pain and discomfort.

Reduced pressure – for weakening joints underneath the ankle bone or kneecap, a brace featuring a cutout area can help minimize pressure and relieve discomfort while offering support to the surrounding area.

Reduced swelling – certain types of braces provide compression, which can help reduce swelling that may occur after activity.

Increased confidence – knowing you have the extra support of the brace can give you greater confidence for completing daily tasks.

Types of Support Braces

Support braces can be made from plastic or metal materials and be padded with foam, synthetic rubber or other soft materials. Medical supply stores, pharmacies, and online stores are good places to find support braces. Different types of braces are available for different conditions.

Prophylactic

Braces designed to protect you from injury, usually when playing a sport.

Functional or Supportive

Braces that support an already injured joint.

Rehabilitative

Braces limit the movement of a joint to allow time for healing. They are generally recommended after surgery.

Unloader or Offloader

These braces are most commonly used by people with knee arthritis due to their ability to reduce pressure on important areas.

Compression braces can also vary based on what part of the body they support.

Ankles

Source: bauerfeind.com.au

This type of brace is often recommended by orthopaedic surgeons to treat mild to moderate pain in the foot and ankle. But if you have severe pain, you may want to consider getting a custom-made leather or plastic ankle brace for improved support.

Back

Source: bauerfeind.com.au

The effects of arthritis on the back and spinal disks can be reduced by using braces or corsets. Corsets are often made of a stretch fabric to allow adjustability. Braces, on the other hand, tend to be more formed and have metal holding. If you have a vertebral fracture due to arthritis, you may benefit more from a brace than a corset.

Wrists

Source: bauerfeind.com.au

Assist devices that can help improve wrist arthritis include braces, splints and gloves. Splints immobilize the wrist to reduce pain. Compression braces are like tight gloves and can help reduce swelling. Wrist wraps can feature an open area for the thumb and metal support for the hand. They provide support for individuals who frequently garden, play tennis or type on computers. An ergonomic mouse can also help eliminate discomfort for those who work on computers. Arthritis gloves provide compression as well as create body heat to help relieve inflammation.

Knees

Source: bauerfeind.com.au

Knee arthritis is a common condition, which explains the several types of knee braces available. Unloader brace is a type of knee brace made from moulded plastic and foam padding. It generally has steel struts that prevent the knee from wobbling and can be adjustable to reduce pressure on the inner or outer portion of the knee. The downside is that they can be bulky in size.

The hinged knee brace has a hole for the kneecap and straps above and below the knee for stability. It has a “hinge” portion on either side of your kneecap to support movement and walking. It is often recommended for knee instability. A drop-lock hinged brace is generally used after an injury or surgery due to its adjustable hinge that prevents the knee from overextending or excessively flexing. And there is also the neoprene sleeve brace that is often pulled up and over the knee. Due to its low profile, it can be worn under your pants. However, this type of brace may not provide the same level of support as the other types.

When Do Support Braces Work?

The effectiveness of support braces often depends on where arthritis has caused areas of instability and damage. For example, for individuals with damage to the medial compartment of the knee, a brace can be helpful to provide support on the outer knee. Those with tear or injury to the anterior collateral ligament may need surgery to stabilize the knee.

According to experts, sometimes braces have limited effectiveness because people don’t wear them as supposed. Reasons individuals stop wearing their braces include discomfort, skin breakdown and swelling. While you can expect some scratching or skin soreness for the first few times wearing a brace, make sure to contact your doctor if it hurts more to wear the brace than it does not wear it.

Low back pain is one of the most irritating pains that can be mild and merely annoying to severe and debilitating. It can come and go, and possibly get worse over time. It can be caused by an injury or a disorder. Sometimes, even the smallest of movements like getting up from a chair, walking or even coughing can feel torturous. Around 85% of people will experience some form of low back pain in their lifetime.

If you are one of those people who feel like a giant electrified claw has claimed the lower part of your back, tearing into each nerve in that part, you might need to look for options that can help you relieve this pain and feel more comfortable. Having your very own spa pool can be very beneficial, as you can reap the benefits of hydrotherapy. However, there are many other more affordable solutions, such as investing in a lumbar support belt. Specially designed to give support to your back, these practical aids can do miracles for your health and well being.

Benefits of Wearing a Back Brace

Source: bauerfeind.com.au

A back brace might help you relieve pain from a plethora of conditions. Doctors recommend wearing lumbar braces for post-operative healing, spondylolysis, osteoarthritis, vertebral compression fractures, lordosis, muscle tension and strain and similar conditions and disorders. Most back support braces have a compression strap that pulls the back brace snugly around you. When the strap or straps are pulled, they cause compression to the core musculature. The result is an overall decrease in the volume of the intra-abdominal soft tissue. This decrease in the volume of soft tissue acts as a stabiliser, directly surrounding the spine.

Wearing a back brace can provide additional spinal support. It can add stability when the low back is unstable due to injured or weakened spinal structures. By holding the torso in a safe, supportive posture, a high-quality lumbar support belt can help create a healthy healing environment for the current injury and prevent additional injuries. The immobilisation it provides is crucial for your back to heal properly.

Special lumbar support belts help massage and relieve muscle tension in the affected region. At the same time, they might improve your posture and elongate your spine. Sometimes bad posture can be the cause for severe back pain. Your spine should be in an upright position, your shoulders back, your chest up, and your core tucked in. The truth is, many people don’t sit and stand in this position. Bad posture also causes spinal weakness and can even result in deformities and make you more prone to injuries. If you’ve noticed that you have started developing posture issues, your safest bet is investing in a lumbar brace. By forcing your spine into a straightened position, you can improve your posture.

Studies show that wearing back braces can minimise the amount of vertebral slippage and significantly improve your walking ability and pain level. They limit excess motion at the fractured segment, helping control pain and potentially lessening damage to the joints, nerves, and muscles. These helpful aids are doctors’ recommendation for people with Isthmic spondylolisthesis, spondylolysis and osteoarthritis.

What to Look for in a Lumber Belt?

Source: bauerfeind.com.au

There are many types of back braces on the market today designed for different parts of the back: mid-spine and lower lumbar spine, and the tailbone or sacrum. Whether you are buying based on a doctor’s prescription, or you are purchasing one over the counter, it’s essential to choose a model that’s suitable for your condition. If you’re suffering from severe lower back pain caused by moderate lumbar deformity, you can opt for a back brace that comes with either a cushioning lumbar or sacral pad. This lumbar brace can massage and relieve muscle tension in the affected region. Stabilisation can be customised by removing the pads in the later stages of the rehabilitation process.

The best models feature flexible aluminium stays that provide further back support and facilitate correct posture in the lumbar spine. Some of them have a height-adjustable functional strap, providing a comfortable fit for everyone. People with SI joint instabilities, SI joint arthritis, and SI joint syndrome might benefit more from a back brace made of two-part gel cushion with massage nubs. This cushion massages trigger points during movement, which promotes blood circulation to help with the healing process. Opt for a brace with tensioning straps that can help stabilise and straighten the pelvis. These straps assist in relieving tension in the surrounding muscles and ligaments of the sacrum.

Since you’re probably going to wear your lumbar support belt a lot, make sure to choose one that is machine washable. Good quality models can be put into a clothing bag and washed on a gentle cycle on cold temperature. The best way to dry it is to put it on a towel and allow it to air dry.

How Many Hours a Day Should You Wear a Back Brace?

Source: bauerfeind.com.au

The key to getting the best results from your back brace is not to overuse it and not to underuse it. The period of use mostly depends on the injury and condition you have. The usual recommendations are to wear it for two hours a day, to avoid your back brace to do all the work all the time. You might feel improvements within a few days, or you might need to wear it for several weeks to see the first results. You can also wear training back support belts when you’re exercising to protect your back against strain, and improve your proprioception for maximum movement control.

There are certain unfortunate aspects that come with ageing that all of us have to face sooner or later. Your bones and joints start to ache from the most minimal movement, you get out of breath from activities that you used to do with relative ease what seemed like a short while ago, and you start to feel tired as soon as you get out of bed in the morning. But while these may seem like problems if you’re not used to them, in comparison to real difficulties that come with old age, these are nothing more than petty annoyances.

It is no secret that no two people are the same. In one way or another we are all different in mind, and more importantly in body. This means that there will unfortunately be those that suffer the effects of ageing sooner and more harshly than others. However, there are always newer and more convenient items coming out that are meant to make the lives of senior citizens a little bit easier.

For example, there is a whole line of fall prevention products for seniors that are meant to help them get around a little bit better. There are many different items in this category, and which one you get depends entirely on how much difficulty with movement you or your loved one has. If all they need is a little assistance, there are the walkers that can help them get around, and the folding canes for the extra stability whenever they need it. Of course, there are also the wheelchairs and mobility scooters for when movement is a far bigger problem.

Another sort of fall prevention products for seniors are the many different types of available care beds. These multi-functional beds usually have both a protective railing on both sides for the benefit of the one using it, as well as a hanging frame with a handle over their heads so that they can both ease into and get out of bed without much difficulty.

And of course, there is also a plethora of items like the automatic jar opener, the swivel cushion, the one way seating aid and many more that are designed to make any senior citizen’s quality of life a little bit better.

As I said before, not everyone is the same and not everyone ages the same. If you are lucky, you might be one of the few that is still spry and fit past when you retire up until you expire. However, it is always good to know that even if age hits you a bit harder than you thought, there are a few items that can help soften the blow.

Whether we like to admit or not, we’re all rather concerned with our body images. Then again, how can we not be when we’re bombarded with news about celebrities and their perfectly shaped bodies all the time? This is why it’s no wonder we’re all trying to get a hold of our weight in one way or another, maintain a healthy diet and give efforts to keep up with a certain exercising routine. But what happens when we get stuck in a rut, far from the results we were hoping to achieve, and on the verge of giving up? As difficult as it seems, this is actually the trial period where we must be persistent the most, and believe we’ve got what it takes to match up celebrities and athletes in reaching success we have our minds set on.

Of course, it’s not always possible to get all the necessary nutrients through diet alone, and nutrients are the basis for our stamina. This is where athletes seek the help of endurance supplements, the aid to help them keep energy levels up. Luckily, these supplements aren’t just for the use of athletes, but anyone who’s going through an energetically and physically demanding workout routine, be it running, swimming, skiing or cycling. It’s important that you don’t go just for any kind of supplement, but rather get to know more about the specific endurance types and combine them well with your diet.

Endurance supplements can be found as energy boosting beverages, gels and power bars, containing caffeine or carbohydrates, creatine, BCAAS (branched-chain amino acids) and protein. The reason caffeine has long been the preferred endurance option for athletes is because of its ability to make exercise more bearable and can help with weight balance thanks to fat oxidation. There’s no point denying the body still chooses carbs as the source of energy, even more so than fat, because of the readily usable glucose which is needed to keep the body’s strength up and prevent early fatigue.

Though creatine often isn’t associated with the kind of endurance athletes require, as an ergogenic aid, along with improving muscular strength it can also improve anaerobic performance, allowing one to take exercising to another level. BCAAs and protein have shown similar effects when it comes to promoting recovery and immune response right after the exercise, which means muscle tissue that undergoes tears during a workout can be repaired easily with the help of these supplements. Furthermore, protein can also maintain your muscle mass. When you decide to combine your workouts with these supplements, make sure you stick to the recommended dose for the best performance outcome and prepare to be amazed by the endurance.

The best and most commonly prescribed solution to hearing loss issues is a hearing aid. Today, there are many different types of hearing aids. Some are designed in the smallest size possible to completely fit in the ear canal, while others can be placed behind the person’s ear and deliver a clean sound into the ear canal. Some hearing aid models use only a tubing to transmit sounds directly into the ear canal. However, hearing aids cannot restore the normal hearing, just like glasses cannot correct vision. All they do is help you hear better and have a normal social life again.

Since this device is available in different sizes and types, finding the right hearing aid for your hearing problem requires the skills of an audiologist. It will take some time, perseverance and multiple checks until you have it properly adjusted. The truth is, people hate the idea of wearing a hearing aid because they relate it to elderly people. Indeed, it does not look amazing, but it is very convenient, neat and oftentimes invisible (depending on the model and brand). Once you get used to it and the idea that it is this small piece that makes your everyday routines easier, you will want to take it out only before bedtime.

Modern hearing aids are digital and come with plenty of innovative features; digital hearing aids provide operations that were not available with the early models of analog hearing aids. Also, analog hearing aids were not as precise as digital ones which can be adjusted to accurate corrections to the unique pattern of any specific hearing loss.

Some of the most innovative features of digital hearing aids are the automatic directional microphones, automatic volume control and noise suppression circuits. These features are extremely efficient in helping people with their hearing issues, whether minimal or severe. Innovative, new and improved features are constantly being developed and implemented and the future hearing aids will definitely have much more features and will be more efficient.

When it comes to choosing a hearing aid, our suggestion is to go for the newest model, provided that you can afford it. A well selected hearing aid is the most effective hearing loss treatment for any patient. The process of choosing the right device can be an exhausting task, but I am sure this article and guidelines will be of great help.

The first thing you should do is visit an audiologist to find the right model of hearing aid for your hearing issue and ear canal. This is definitely the most important step as it will establish the base for your further search. Once you know what you are looking for, hit the market and purchase your ideal hearing aid.
